# Custom Agents

> Create and configure a Voice Agent with Chloe in Close. Write instructions, add skills and knowledge, run test calls and simulations, and activate it.

> Custom Agents is currently in private alpha and under active development. We're rolling it out to a limited number of accounts by invitation. If you'd like to join, reach out to your account manager.

With Custom Agents, you can set up AI agents that handle a wide variety of tasks in Close automatically in 3 simple steps:

1. Configure a trigger — set your Custom Agent to run on a schedule or when a specific event happens in Close (similar to Workflows).
2. Add your instructions — provide your Custom Agent with all the instructions it needs to get the job done.
3. Pre-approve tools — give your Custom Agent permission to use tools to interact with objects and activities in Close, like updating leads and opportunities, creating notes, adding comments, or creating tasks.

## Custom Agent components

Every agent is made up of four components:

| Component | What it controls |
| ----------------- | ------------------------------------------------- |
| **Trigger** | When the agent runs |
| **Instructions** | What the agent does |
| **Tools** | Which actions the agent can take without approval |
| **Notifications** | Who gets notified when a run finishes |

## Trigger

Choose how the agent starts a run:

* On a schedule — Run at fixed times, for example every weekday at 9 AM. Set a schedule and timezone.
* When something happens — Triggers an Agent run when a CRM event (ex: a Custom Activity is published) occurs. Choose an object type (Lead, Contact, Opportunity, Call, Custom Activity, Meeting, or Form Submission), whether it was created or updated, and any filters to narrow down which records trigger a run.

## Instructions

The Instructions field is where you tell the agent what to do, in plain language — for example: *"Look at all my meetings scheduled for today and put together an agenda for each one."*

These instructions are sent to the agent as the starting prompt for a new chat session every time it runs, so be as specific as possible about what you want it to look at and do.

## Tools and approvals

The Tools section controls which actions the agent can take on its own, without stopping to ask for confirmation.

Select the tools you trust the agent to use automatically. Any tool you don't select still runs when needed — but it pauses the session and waits for a person to review it first.

When a run pauses for approval:

* The run's status changes to Needs approval.
* Open the run to see the paused action, then choose:
  * Allow — approve this one action
  * Allow for this session — approve this action, and any repeats of it, for the rest of this run
  * Deny — block the action

## Notifications

Turn on "Send an email when a run finishes" to notify a user or group every time this agent completes a run — whether it succeeded, failed, or is waiting on an approval. Recipients default to you, but you can add specific users or groups instead.

There's currently no separate option to notify only on failures or only when a run needs approval — every finished run sends the same notification.

## Activating and managing an agent

New agents start as a draft. From the agent's Details tab:

* Save draft — save your changes without going live
* Activate — turn the agent on so it starts running on its trigger
* Deactivate — turn off an active agent without deleting it
* Save — update an already-active agent (changes apply to future runs)

Use the More actions menu to Run now (trigger an immediate run), Duplicate agent, or Delete agent. Only the Agent creator can edit the Agent.

## Monitoring runs

Open the Runs tab on an agent to see every run and its status, including a count of runs that need your attention. From there you can open a run to see its activity and resolve any approvals it's waiting on.

## Submitting feedback and bug reports

Custom Agents is under active development, and your feedback helps shape what ships next. This private alpha is supported through Close's Slack Community in the **#custom-agents-alpha** channel. Please share feedback, report bugs, or ask questions there.
